Thermal tag is a specialized thick paper material coated with a heat-sensitive chemical layer, combining the rigidity of cardboard with the convenience of thermal printing. Unlike thin, flimsy ordinary thermal receipt paper, it has a thicker base paper, sturdy texture and good shape retention, avoiding curling or deformation after printing. Its core printing principle is heat-induced chemical discoloration: thermal print heads transfer instant high temperature to the coated surface, activating the reaction between leuco dye and developer in the coating to form clear black text, barcodes, patterns and images—no ink ribbons, toners or ink cartridges are needed. This inkless printing method offers low operational costs, fast output speed and simple equipment maintenance, making it widely used in various commercial scenarios.
It is commonly applied in membership cards, supermarket price tags, luggage tags, logistics shipping cards, exhibition admission badges, retail shelf labels and temporary access control cards. Compared with plastic PVC cards,Thermal tag is more cost-effective, lightweight, eco-friendly and easy to recycle, meeting the lightweight and cost-control needs of retail, logistics and event industries. Premium variants are often added with anti-fading, anti-oil and anti-water coatings to prevent printed content from fading under sunlight, oil stains or damp conditions, extending the service life of printed labels.
Grammage (measured in gsm, grams per square meter) is the key standard to distinguish the thickness and hardness of thermal tag, with several mature mainstream specifications in the market. Lightweight thermal tag ranges from 180gsm to 230gsm—180gsm and 200gsm are ideal for thin price tags and short-term use labels, featuring moderate hardness and low material costs.
Medium-weight thermal tag covers 250gsm to 300gsm, the most universal option for luggage tags, store membership cards and activity badges. It balances rigidity and print smoothness perfectly, rarely causing paper jams in thermal printers. Heavy-duty thermal tag includes 350gsm and 400gsm, with ultra-stiff texture suitable for long-term reusable tags and high-grade display labels. Note that these heavy types require thermal printers with strong paper feeding structures to avoid jamming. Additionally, customized weights like 280gsm and 320gsm are available for specific label size requirements.
In summary, thermal tag fills the market gap between thin thermal paper and rigid plastic cards. Its diversified grammage options enable enterprises to select the appropriate thickness according to usage scenarios, service life and printing equipment, making it an essential consumable in the modern thermal printing industry.
