Silver PP and silver PET labels are two mainstream metallic label materials widely used in thermal transfer printing. Both feature a sleek silver metallic appearance, excellent waterproof and oilproof properties, and decorative and identification functions. However, they differ significantly in flexibility, temperature resistance, chemical stability and printing adaptability. A clear understanding of their differences helps standardize material selection and avoid label deformation, printing falling off and short service life in practical applications.

1. Physical Properties

Silver PP Labels

Silver PP is a metallized polypropylene film with outstanding flexibility and ductility. The material is soft and can fit closely to curved and irregular surfaces without cracking or warping. It boasts good ductility and will not tear easily under slight stretching. Nevertheless, its dimensional stability is limited. Under high temperature or long-term storage, silver PP is prone to minor shrinkage and edge curling, which affects the overall sticking effect. Its metallic luster is bright and uniform, focusing on decorative visual effects.

Silver PET Labels

Silver PET is a polyester-based metallic film with high rigidity and structural stability. Different from soft PP, PET material is stiff, tensile-resistant and anti-tearing, with almost no deformation under external force. It has excellent dimensional stability, resisting shrinkage and warping under temperature changes. Available in glossy and matte finishes, matte silver PET effectively avoids light reflection, ensuring clear barcode scanning, making it more practical for industrial identification.

2. Environmental and Chemical Resistance

The two materials have obvious gaps in environmental adaptability. Silver PP has a working temperature range of -30℃ to 80℃. It will wrinkle and deform when exposed to continuous high temperature above 80℃. It can resist daily water and oil stains but performs poorly against strong solvents such as high-concentration alcohol and acetone, which will damage its silver coating and printed content.

In contrast, silver PET has a wider temperature range of -40℃ to 120℃, suitable for high-temperature working environments. It has superior chemical resistance, tolerating weak acids, alkalis, oils and conventional industrial solvents. It can withstand repeated alcohol wiping and daily cleaning, maintaining intact appearance and printed patterns for a long time.

3. Printing Ribbon Matching and Application Scenarios

Ribbon matching is critical to printing quality. For silver PP labels, wax-resin hybrid ribbons are the optimal cost-effective choice, while resin ribbons are optional for higher durability. Wax-based ribbons are not applicable due to poor adhesion.

Silver PET with a dense and smooth surface requires full resin ribbons exclusively. Only resin ribbons can form firm molecular adhesion with PET films. Wax and hybrid ribbons will result in easy peeling and fading of printed content.

In terms of applications, flexible and cost-effective silver PP is mainly used for indoor decorative labels of cosmetics, beverages and food packaging. Rigid, durable silver PET is dedicated to industrial scenarios, including electronic nameplates, auto parts, mechanical equipment and medical device labels for long-term identification.

4. Conclusion

To sum up, silver PP is a decorative, flexible and cost-friendly material for mild indoor environments and curved surfaces. Silver PET is a high-performance industrial material with superior temperature and solvent resistance for harsh environments and long-term use. Reasonable selection based on working conditions is the key to stable label application.
